What’s the difference between BootForge™ Standard and BootForge™ Pro?
Standard has the Standard Clamp, the magnetic receiver and the Medium (25 mm) head, which handles most punches. Pro has the Kreg Automaxx clamp, the same receiver, all three heads (Small 20 mm, Medium 25 mm and Large 40 mm) and a marking kit. Pro is $169.00, $42.95 less than buying those parts separately. You can also add a Small or Large head to Standard later on the Build Your Own page.
Will it work on my boots?
Almost certainly. Nearly every alpine and touring boot shell can be heated and punched, some plastics just take more patience. Polyurethane (PU), used in most alpine boots, is the easiest to work. Polyolefin and Pebax shells spring back more, so they need a bit more heat and a longer cool-down under the clamp. Grilamid, common in lightweight touring boots, is the toughest, so go in small steps. Dual-material shells work too, punch the harder plastic, not the soft insert. Not sure what your boot is made of? Do I need a heat gun?
Heat is required. A heat gun is ideal, and a strong hair dryer can work on thinner shells. You're softening the shell, not melting it, so it stretches and holds its new shape once it cools under the clamp.
Is it safe to do this myself?
Done carefully, it's a straightforward home job. Heat evenly, go slow and start with a small punch, you can always punch a little more later. Too much heat in one spot can damage any boot shell, which is why the guide walks you through each step. You're softening the plastic, not melting it, and the clamp does the work.
Why not just go to a shop?
A good boot fitter is great, but every adjustment is another visit, and shops usually charge per punch, per boot. Feet change and new boots need work too. With your own kit you can make small adjustments whenever you need them, on any pair of boots in the house. Some shops use BootForge themselves because it's quick to set up and repeatable.
